Sharon Cates-Williams Discusses Challenges of Energy Efficiency for Data Centers, Buildings and IT Equipment at the NYS Performance Computing Seminar

While New York State has expanded programs over the last year to address the energy needs of the growing data center industry further steps are underway to ensure that the State can support the economic development of the data center industry while achieving Governor David A. Paterson’s energy and environmental goals.

At a NYS Performance Computing Seminar hosted by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), energy experts noted the State is working in concert with private business to improve the efficiency of Information Technology infrastructure to support the growth of the industry and to address the impact this critical market segment will have on New York’s energy needs.

The event was attended by CIOs and IT professionals from state and local government agencies, and private companies who operate or manage data centers or large installations of IT equipment.

During the event Sharon Cates-Williams, NYS Deputy CIO for IT Delivery Services highlighted what CIO/OFT is doing in New York State as it relates to best practices, and challenges of energy efficiency for data centers, buildings and IT equipment.

Governor Paterson has set goals of meeting 45 percent of the State’s electricity needs through improved energy efficiency and renewable energy by 2015 and to reduce current greenhouse gas emissions from all sources within the State 80 percent below levels emitted in 1990 by the year 2050.
